Providing access to clean, reliable and affordable energy by adopting microgrid (MG) power systems is important for countries looking to achieve their sustainable development goals as the extension of the grid is time and capital expenditure.  These MGs are small electrical power systems that connect several electricity users to some distributed power generators and energy storage systems, which are mainly interconnected by power converters and can be made of renewable energy sources or hybridized with fossil fuel generators. One of such important problem associated with a microgrid is the issue of selecting the appropriate size configuration. Microgrid consisting of various energy mix including renewable and non-renewable energy resources like PV, Wind, diesel and battery storage, has to be optimally sized, to determine the right amount of each of the energy source required to meet the energy demand, considering the intermittent nature of the renewable energy resources. Improper sizing would lead to huge investment cost which could have been avoided, it could also lead to inefficient (under) utilization of energy sources and reduced reliability of power would be suffered by the community in which the microgrid is meant to have supplied. In addition to sizing. This work aims to address this problem by using a meta-heuristic optimization technique known as Cultural Algorithm (CA) to determine the optimal size configuration of the hybrid energy sources which the objectives of the reduced cost of energy and maximize the reliability. To determine the optimal size of each hybrid energy source to meet the load demand considering the Loss of Power Supply Probability (LPSP) constraint using Cultural Algorithm.
Three different cases are considered in this work using Matlab simulation.
Case:1 Stand-alone Hybrid Energy System, consisting of Solar PV, Wind Power System (WPS), battery storage and converters.
Case:2: Grid-connected Hybrid energy system, consisting of Grid Power, Solar PV, Wind Power system (WPS), battery storage and converters.
Case:3: Un-reliable Grid-connected Hybrid energy system, consisting of Grid Power, Solar PV, Wind Power system (WPS), battery storage and converters. In this case, the grid power is not available all the time.
