AN INCREMENTAL HOP SELECTION SCHEME FOR AMPLIFY-AND-FORWARD MULTI-HOP NETWORKS

Multi-Hop networks (MHNs), where multiple relays are connected in series, are known as effective means to increase network coverage. Although the half-duplex amplify-and-forward (HD-AF) protocol based MHNs can improve network coverage, however, it suffers from spectral efficiency loss due to the usage of multiple time phases. Recently, the path selection and the path combining schemes for MHNs were introduced in order to achieve additional performance gain. However, they require a high calculation complexity and a network overhead and did not consider the problem of spectral efficiency loss like the conventional MHNs. In dual-hop networks, an incremental relaying (IR) scheme has been introduced in order to prevent the spectral efficiency loss. The IR scheme can improve the spectral efficiency because the relay path is activated only when the direct link between source and destination cannot support a certain performance threshold. Moreover, for multiple relay networks, an incremental opportunistic relaying (IOR), where a relay is selected by maximum received SNR criterion and is activated through the IR scheme.

In this design an incremental hop selection (IHS) scheme which improves network coverage while preventing spectral efficiency loss in half-duplex amplify-and-forward (HDAF) protocol based multi-hop networks (MHNs) is discussed using Matlab simulation. In contrast to the fixed N-hop networks, the proposed IHS scheme increases the number of hops only when the currently selected path cannot support a performance threshold. Since the proposed scheme uses minimal time phases to satisfy the constraint, the spectral efficiency can be improved.
