FILTER BANK MULTICARRIER MODULATION FOR 5G

Recent discussions on viable technologies for 5G emphasize on the need for waveforms with better spectral containment per subcarrier than the celebrated orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) is an alternative technology that can serve this need. Subcarrier waveforms are built based on a prototype filter that is designed with this emphasis in mind. This, design is based on Filter Bank Multicarrier Modulation (FBMC) system and highlights the merits of modulation method for emerging fifth generation (5G) Wireless Communication Systems. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is an excellent choice for fourth generation (4G). The channel estimation techniques for FBMC systems based on pilot arrangement is designed using Matlab. The channel estimation based on comb type pilot arrangement is applied through, different algorithms for both estimating channel at pilot frequencies and interpolating the channel. The estimation of channel at pilot frequencies is based on comb-type channel estimation with LMS estimate while the channel interpolation is done using linear interpolation, second order interpolation, low-pass interpolation, and spline cubic interpolation. The performances are measured on bit error rate with QAM as modulation schemes, and multi-path Rayleigh fading, and Auto-Regressive (AR) based fading channels as channel models.
