IMAGE SEGMENTATION BY REGION GROWING, WATERSHED AND SPLIT MERGER ALGORITHMS

The segmentation of an image is defined as its partition into regions, in which the regions satisfy some specified criteria. A commonly used criterion is that of homogeneity, that is, the regions should be homogeneous with respect to some property, such as color or texture. An alternative criterion is that the regions should correspond to the constituent regions or objects of an image. An even stronger requirement could be that the regions have a strong correlation with regions or objects of the real world contained in the image. With the rapid advancement of computer technology, the use of computer-based technologies is increasing in different fields of life. Image segmentation is an important problem in different fields of image processing and computer vision. Image segmentation is the process of dividing images according to its characteristic e.g., color and objects present in the images. Different methods are presented for image segmentation. Three algorithmic frameworks using Region Growing, Watershed and Split Merger Method. The tool used in this design is MATLAB.
