OPTIMAL TUNING OF PI CONTROLLER USING GENETIC ALGORITHM FOR VECTOR CONTROL OF INDUCTION MOTOR

The vector control is the most popular control technique of AC induction motors. In special reference frames, the expression for the electromagnetic torque of the smooth-air-gap machine is like the expression for the torque of the separately excited DC machine. In the case of induction machines, the control is usually performed in the reference frame (d-q) attached to the rotor flux space vector. That’s why the implementation of vector control requires information on the modulus and the space angle (position) of the rotor flux space vector. In this Simulink model an induction motor being fed by a three-phase supply and it is being rectified by a rectifier and the dc supply is again converted into ac signal through and PWM inverter for generating the pulses to drive the induction motor. In the vector control, hysteresis controller which has been set with a band ranging between -20/2 and +20/2. The band has been assigned based on the rated current. The tuning is done by a PI controller technique used to find the values of Kp and Ki. The main objective function of the PI controller is given as follows,

f(x) = 100 * (p (1) ^2 - p (2)) ^2 + (1 - p (1)) ^2

Where p (1) represents Kp and p (2) represents Ki.

Genetic algorithms are used for optimization and used here for optimal tuning of the proportional-integral controller.
