COGNITIVE RADIO NETWORKS PERFORMANCE, APPLICATIONS AND TECHNOLOGY

Increasing use of wireless applications is putting a pressure on licensed spectrum which is insufficient and expensive. Indeed, because of allocation of fixed spectrum, more portion of spectrum is underutilized. The bandwidth becomes expensive due to a shortage of frequencies. Therefore, for efficient utilization of spectrum, we need to sniff the spectrum to determine whether it is being used by primary user or not. Cognitive radio is a technology developed for the effective use of radio spectrum sources. The spectrum sensing function plays a key role in the performance of cognitive radio networks. The term cognitive radio refers to the adoption of radio parameters using the sensed information of the spectrum. Three major categories of spectrum sensing techniques; transmitter detection, receiver detection and interference temperature detection. This Matlab design presents five techniques for spectrum sensing as given below,

1. Matched Filter Detection

2. Energy Detection

3. Cyclostationary Feature Detection

4. Minimizing Sensing Time for Detection

5. Fuzzy Logic Based Decision
