DESIGN OF EFFECTIVE INTERFACE FOR REALIZING HUMAN-MACHINE EMPATHY BASED ON FACE EXPRESSION

This project is designed for the purpose to construct an effective interface in order to realize human-computer empathy by using facial expression considering 5 basic expressions i.e Happy, Sad, Angry, Neutral, Surprise. In the facial expression recognition, the feature value extraction part consists of the following 4 steps.

1. Extraction of the face region,

2.Extraction of facial organs,

3.Extraction of feature points and

4.Calculation of feature values.

As the feature points to calculate the feature values, on both eyebrows and both eyes and mouth, points were selected. These feature values are first calculated from the feature points set on the facial organs which are extracted from the facial images captured by a color camera. Then, the degrees of the basic five expressions are recognized from the feature values by neural network estimation. The design is tested using Matlab in two conditions i.e considering image and video as test input, which is shown in video demo.
